Pickleball Paddle Grip Size: Circumference and Rules
Pickleball paddle grip size is the circumference of the handle, the distance around it, stated in inches. Two sizes dominate. In the PickleSwaps catalog, 319 paddles, October 2026, 113 of the 254 paddles with a listed grip circumference are 4.25 inches and 99 are 4.125 inches. That's 212 paddles, or 83%. The full listed range is 3.9 to 4.75 inches.
Neither USA Pickleball nor UPA-A sets a grip-size limit. USA Pickleball explicitly allows players to change grip size with inserts and to add grip wrap, and UPA-A lists grip inserts and overgrips among its permitted customizations. Below are the catalog numbers, how brands state the figure, what the overgrip makers themselves say, and the alteration rules word for word.
What grip size measures
Grip size is the distance around the handle. UPA-A's spec document separates the layers. "Grip means the base covering installed over the paddle handle," and "Overgrip means an additional wrap applied over the base Grip." (UPA-A Paddle Specifications and Testing Requirements v26.6). The 2026 USA Pickleball rulebook defines "Paddle Grip Adjustments" as "Non-mechanical devices that change the size of the grip or stabilize a player’s hand on the grip." (2026 USA Pickleball Official Rulebook).
Grip size is a different number from grip length, which is how long the handle is. For that, see pickleball paddle grip length.
Grip size in our catalog
Method: we counted every row in the PickleSwaps catalog, 319 paddles, October 2026 that has a listed grip circumference (n = 254). Values are the listed circumference in inches, kept exactly as listed, so 4.125 and 4.13 are counted separately. "Median" is the middle of the sorted list (the lower middle for an even count). Rows without a grip circumference are left out.
- Median: 4.15 inches. That's the lower-middle value, sitting between the two big groups at 4.125 and 4.25.
- Range: 3.9 to 4.75 inches.
- 10th to 90th percentile: 4.125 to 4.25 inches.
- 4 to 4.25 inches inclusive: 244 of 254 paddles.
- Above 4.25 inches: 8 paddles. Below 4 inches: 2 paddles (both 3.9).
| Listed grip circumference | Paddles |
|---|---|
| 3.9 in | 2 |
| 4 in | 15 |
| 4.02 to 4.1 in (4.02, 4.05, 4.06, 4.1) | 5 |
| 4.125 in | 99 |
| 4.13 in | 5 |
| 4.15 to 4.19 in (4.15, 4.18, 4.19) | 7 |
| 4.25 in | 113 |
| 4.33 to 4.375 in (4.33, 4.375) | 5 |
| 4.45 to 4.75 in (4.45, 4.5, 4.75) | 3 |
Grouped rows add up the exact listed values shown in brackets. The total is 254. The whole spread, from 3.9 to 4.75 inches, is less than an inch around.
How brands state grip size
The figure goes by several names on brands' own spec pages. Some pages flag it as approximate.
- JOOLA: "Grip Circumference*: 4.25in *May vary slightly" for the Perseus Pro IV 16mm (JOOLA Perseus Pro IV spec page).
- Selkirk: "Grip circumference: 4.25”" for the SLK Valkyrie (Selkirk SLK Valkyrie spec page).
- Gearbox: "Handle Circumference: 4” grip" for the Pro Ultimate Elongated 16mm (Gearbox Pro Ultimate Elongated spec page).
- Onix: "Grip Size Circumference: 4"" for the Z5 Graphite, with the note "Approximate measurements and weights only" (Onix Z5 Graphite spec page).
- CRBN: "Handle Circum. 4.125"" for all four TruFoam Barrage shapes, under the note "Specs are averages and approximations" (CRBN TruFoam Barrage spec page).
- Six Zero: "Grip Circumference 4.125”" for the Double Black Diamond 14mm, and "Grip Circumference 4.1”" for the 16mm on the same page (Six Zero Double Black Diamond spec page).
Not every spec page lists it. Paddletek's Bantam GTO-C page gives a "Handle Length: 5.5"" but no circumference (Paddletek Bantam GTO-C spec page).
On sizing methods: we looked for a way to measure your hand for a grip size in USA Pickleball's rulebook and Equipment Standards Manual, in UPA-A's spec document, and on the manufacturer spec pages above. None of them gives one. So we don't give one either. If a brand publishes a fitting method on its own product or spec page, that's the place to check for that paddle.
What overgrip makers say overgrips do
An overgrip goes on top of the existing grip. Here is what three makers' own product pages say:
- JOOLA Premium Overgrip: "Simply wrap the overgrip directly over your paddle's existing handle." The page lists a "Tacky feel" and says it is "Moisture-absorbing" (JOOLA Premium Overgrip product page).
- Gearbox Dry Overwrap Grip: it "offers exceptional sweat absorption," has a "thin yet durable construction," and is installed "over your original grip" (Gearbox Dry Overwrap Grip product page).
- Selkirk Comfort Overgrip: described with "Comfort, cushioning, sweat absorption, and easy installation" (Selkirk Comfort Overgrip product page).
None of these three product pages states how much an overgrip adds to the handle's circumference, so we don't give a number.
What the rules allow you to change
USA Pickleball
Rule 3.D.6 (Allowable Alterations) of the 2026 rulebook: "Altered paddles must meet all specifications. The only allowable alterations or additions by a player to a commercially produced paddle as certified are:" The list includes "Replacement of OEM interchangeable grips," "Changes to the grip size via inserts" and "Addition or replacement of grip wrap." (2026 USA Pickleball Official Rulebook).
The Equipment Standards Manual says the same in 2.E.5.a. Player alterations "may include such items as" edge guard tape, weighted tape, OEM weight systems, "changes to the grip size via inserts, grip wraps, OEM interchangeable grips," replacement faces and identification markings. Section 2.E.6.e lists the same grip items among the only removable parts it allows (USA Pickleball Equipment Standards Manual, Rev. 3.0, January 2025).
Two limits still apply. Altered paddles must meet all specifications, including the 17-inch length and 24-inch length-plus-width limits. And under the rulebook's decals-and-tape rule, decals and tape on the paddle face "must not extend more than 1.0 inch (2.54 cm) above the top of the grip." Neither the rulebook nor the manual sets a minimum or maximum grip circumference. The word "circumference" doesn't appear in either.
UPA-A (pro tour)
UPA-A's section 3.4.3, Permitted Customizations, lists "Edge Guard Tape," "Edge guards," "Overgrips," "Flat weighted tape," "Grip inserts," "Butt cap replacement" and "Butt cap weight." Section 3.4.2 says: "Except for the grip, paddles shall not incorporate components or features designed to be removable." UPA-A also has a weight cap that counts the grip. Section 3.1.4 says "The total weight of the paddle, including grip (and any modifications, if on-site), shall not exceed 10 ounces (283.5 grams)." (UPA-A Paddle Specifications and Testing Requirements v26.6). USA Pickleball, by contrast, has no weight limit. See how heavy a pickleball paddle should be.
For how the two programs differ overall, see USAP vs UPA-A paddle certification. To check a specific model, use our USAP status tracker or UPA-A status tracker.
Reading grip size on a spec sheet
- "Grip circumference," "handle circumference" and "grip size" mean the same measurement. It's the distance around the handle, in inches.
- Expect 4.125 or 4.25. Those two values cover 212 of the 254 paddles in our catalog with a listed figure.
- Treat small differences as approximate. JOOLA, Onix and CRBN all flag their figures as variable or approximate.
- Remember it can be changed legally. USA Pickleball allows grip-size inserts and grip wrap; UPA-A permits grip inserts and overgrips.
